On a recent trip through Bradley International Airport I and thousands of others walked by a visible reminder that we cannot always control how our brand is viewed. Right on top of a garbage can was a discarded Cabeau Travel Pillow with the tagline “The travel pillow that works.” Well, I guess the pillow didn’t work for at least one traveler. Granted most people don’t think the way I do, but all I could think about was the negative impressions, conscious or not, by all the passersby that day.

A few weeks ago, I was asked to volunteer at a community event. It was an event I wanted to attend, but it coincided with my wife and daughter’s trip for college registration, a hockey tournament and two other events that I had already declined. However, this one I could do with my youngest daughter so I said yes.

So there we were, serving pizza and corn at a community food fair – not a bad stint. Over the course of our time, I had several small conversations with my coworkers. I was feeling pretty good.
